Council Member Su Connell
My name is Susan M. Connell. I am a mother, a wife for forty four years and widow for six years. I am a recent bride of three years. I was born in Superior Wisconsin and lived and attended the University of Milwaukee. I moved to Payson in 2001 and have enjoyed living here for over 13 years.
I retired from Procter & Gamble after 18 years in multiple careers- personnel, sales and marketing, purchasing and material logistics. Those years were spent in Phoenix making a drug product called Metamucil and my tasks involved team management of 10 to 12 employees and a budget of over 25 million dollars. Prior to relocating to Arizona in the early 80s I was employed for almost 18 years by a Book Printing Company in Menasha Wisconsin.
My family has been active in politics for over 100 years. My great uncle was a United States Senator and Vice Presidential nominee and my great aunt was the first head of the Children's Bureau in Washington DC. My father served as a Wisconsin state legislator and senator. I believe in carrying on this noble tradition, and have been a member of the TOP council for the past 8 years.
My daughter, Colleen, resides with her husband Greg in Mesa, Arizona. She recently celebrated her 25th anniversary with ASU in the Animal Care and Research Department. My granddaughter, Cory, now 28, is a registered nurse. I also have two wonderful, handsome, unspoiled great grand sons, ages 3½ and 2.
In early 2001, I became affiliated with the Rim Country Literacy Program. This is a 501-C3 adult education program that provided pre-GED/GED training, Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language and Family literacy programs. I spent 6+ years as director of this program.
One of my core beliefs is in civic involvement and volunteerism, “Giving back to the community which is giving me so much”. To further this belief I have been or am a:
*Member of the Board of Directors of the TIMEOUT SHELTER, for 5 years.
*Board member and past president of the Payson Park & Recreation Board still active on the board.
*Member of Friends of the Library and most recently on the Board of Friends of Tonto Natural Bridge.
* Rotarian and Kiwanian each for 4 years. Additionally I have been a member of Soropotomist and Optimist Organization for several years.
* Past ambassador for Gila Country Chamber of Commerce and within the last 2 years became the Town of Payson Liaison to the Chamber.
* Town Liaison to a youth council called Payson Area Advisory Youth Council (PAAYC). “PAAYC” is a group of dedicated, active teenage leaders who are Ambassadors for the Youth of Rim Country and for the Future.” I have assisted them with projects like Relay for Life, Grade School Cleanups, and lessons in how government works and what opportunities are available within governments.
