We live in a beautiful, thriving community that is also considered high country desert. Water is our lifeblood and we must all do our part to use water wisely to ensure an adequate water supply for ourselves and for future generations. Water conservation not only will help save water, it will also save you money.

Try using the following tips around your home:

Water Saving Tips

  • Residential water mete and shut off valve boxBe familiar with and follow all water conservation restrictions.
  • Pay attention to your water bill and become familiar with your water meter – use them to track your water use and detect leaks.
  • Locate your customer shut off valve (or have installed if you do not have one) so that water can be saved if a pipe should burst.
  • Show your children how to turn off the faucets and spigots completely after each use.
  • Be aware! Listen for drips and leaks around the house and have them fixed.

Indoor Water Saving Tips

  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving, rather than running a steady stream.
  • Low-flow showerheadLimit showers to five minutes and switch to an ultra low-flow showerhead.
  • Check your toilet periodically for leaks. Dye tabs are available at the Water Department or you can place a few drops of food coloring in the tank. After a few minutes, if you see color in the bowl, you have a leak.
  • Automatic dishwashers and washers are more efficient if run only when they are full.
  • If you wash dishes by hand, fill one half of the sink with soapy water and the other half with clean water instead of letting the water run. Place a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of letting the tap run to get a cool drink.
  • Install aerators on every faucet. This could save you as much as 1 gallon every minute you use them.
  • Water your houseplants with water saved from washing your fruits and vegetables, waiting for the water to warm up, or even when you clean your fish tank!

Outdoor Water Saving Tips

  • Swamp CoolerEvaporative coolers require a seasonal maintenance check up to operate efficiently. Check for and fix any leaks you find.
  • When washing the car, use soap and water from a bucket. Use a hose with a shut off nozzle for the final rinse.
  • Use a broom when cleaning your driveway, patio and walks.
  • Check and maintain your drip/sprinkler system regularly being sure to adjust your irrigation schedule to accommodate seasonal changes. Never water on windy days!
  • Use the Native and Low Water Use Plant List as you plan your landscaping.
  • Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil. Mulch also helps control weeds that compete with landscape plants for water.
  • Visually inspect your irrigation system once a month during daylight hours. Check and fix any tilted, clogged or broken heads. You won’t notice problems with your system unless you see it in operation.
  • Avoid bursting or freezing pipes by winterizing your outdoor spigots. Be sure to turn off your irrigation system in the winter.
